Growing older was usually accompanied by the face becoming more and more wrinkled and it was often seen as an honourable badge of age and wisdom. Not any more, the emphasis now is youth and any signs of ageing must be eradicated as soon as possible.
Some may feel that this obsession with trying to look younger, is not a healthy way of thinking, but it is a fact that nearly everybody is living to a much greater age, so that showing a face crisscrossed with wrinkles is no longer a big deal and the trick now is to look much younger than our years.
We cannot keep our young looks forever, but we can attempt to slow the ageing process down as much as possible.
It is never too early to start but most will not worry about things until the nasty little laughter lines and crows feet are already etching themselves into the face. The remedies for anti-ageing are many and varied and not every one is right for every person, which means that you will need to experiment until you find your best strategy.
For the older and more damaged skin, the quickest method to look younger is going to be a face lift. A Plastic Surgeon can stretch and tighten the skin, making it look more elastic and younger. Although quick, it is the most drastic, expensive, dangerous but possibly the most long lasting way to looking younger. Any surgery brings a risk of infection, problems with having an anaesthetic as well as the pain. However if you really have to look younger, the face lift will work nearly every time.
Another quick, if temporary, way to look younger are having a series of injections of Botox or fillers. This is where a mild strain of botulism is injected under the skin, normally on the forehead, neck, lips and on the crows feet. The botulism paralyses the muscles so that they do not flex and so will smooth out the wrinkles. Fillers are collagen or other substances which are squirted into the skin which fills up the wrinkles and thereby smooth the skin. These injections normally last only a few months before a repeat course of treatment is required.
A long term solution to younger looking skin is the use of anti-ageing creams and serums, of which there are many on the market. Most make some very flattering claims for their products which may not work for you at all. Different skins and skin types means that some experimenting should be carried out. It has been said that just Petroleum Jelly and basic cold cream are all the moisturisers you need to keep your skin looking young. As these are the least expensive, it would be a good starting out point. Whichever you use, always give at least four weeks to see if there is any difference before changing.
There are a number of products that have inside, some very exotic ingredients which makes them quite expensive, so chose wisely. If you find that you are not making any progress, a consultation with a qualified dermatologist may be a worthwhile expense, as they will be able to give you the best information on your skin.
You may wish to try facial exercises which is arguably the best way to deal with wrinkles as it works on the muscles under the skin, toning and firming them, restoring their youthful firmness. It should be used in conjunction with a good moisturiser which will give you the complete solution.
Finally, you could just say I am who I am, and decide to grow old gracefully. Let nature do what it needs to do and to heck with everybody else. It takes a very strong will to do this but there are some out who will do just this.
More recently, new forms of non-surgical facelifts have gained popularity. These procedures often target smaller specific areas, but can provide great results for those with reasonable skin elasticity. Combining skin treatments such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser skin resurfacing can give similar but less extreme versions of a face lift.
